Welcome to Dula Tips and Tits, the podcast where we cut through the noise and get real about what it takes to build a sustainable doula business. I'm Kaylee Harrod. I've been a doula informally for 14 years and full time for seven.
Around here, we don't sugarcoat stuff. We talk autonomy, owning your worth, creating a business that works for you. No fluff, no burnout, just the honest truth on how to be your own best boss. Let's get into today's episode.
Welcome back to Dula Tips and Tits. I'm going to start today by saying what I do as a business coach is the same as what I do for clients, for pregnant clients, right? I am a doula for your doula business and you as a doula, just like I am a doula for birth and postpartum for my clients that I have, right?
When we think about the way that we classify our work with our clients, I don't know many doulas who believe that birth cannot happen without a doula. Like birth is possible without a doula, totally, right?
People do it all the time, but it's better, in my humble opinion, with a doula. It's also more supported with a doula. It's less traumatic with a doula, et cetera, right? Not all doulas, like some, some doulas are bad, right?
Some doulas are showing up in these spaces in ways that are dangerous and that makes me really angry, to be honest with you, because I think that it's kind of a sacred role that we have to take really seriously.
Some people aren't doing that, which is true in every profession, right? But when you think about the way... that you know you make birth better, that is the same way I think about my presence in your business.
I know that I make running a business easier for doula client, for doula business owners. I make it more clear, less frantic, better supported, not doing any hip squeezes on any doulas, although I would do that if you were in person with me.
Not against a good hip squeeze for a random reason because honestly, hip squeezes are an amazing feeling. If you have never had one done to you, you should have that done ASAP because they feel great.
But the emotional and practical support is huge. And I realized that doula business owners Tend to be firmly in the group of businesses that are sort of like I got this by myself Right, and I know not everyone fits that box.
So if you're like Kaylee, I don't think like that. Okay, that's great I love that for you But a lot of people are like I can figure it out. I can do it. I can figure it out I can get it done and the reality is Birth can also be figured out right like your client could give birth without you I don't know about you, but I have a lots of clients who say to me I couldn't have done this without you and I'm like you could have but would it have been the same experience?
No Right, and I mean I very firmly am like oh you did most the work my friend, you know Like I am NOT the star of this show, but would it have been a different experience without me? Yes 100% and that is part of why I show up with confidence because I know that right I know that your birth experience is better with my support That's why I Can show up without being like oh, I hope I'm helpful today.
Like no, I am gonna be helpful I know how to be helpful and I know that this is going to improve your birth experience, right? Truly the same is true with the business like your business will be easier.
It will be smoother It will feel more strategic. It will feel more Aligned it will feel more sustainable if you have a business doula, which is essentially What I am right? I am a doula business coach, which means I'm a business doula.
That's what I do. And when I doula you in your business, I help you figure out what the best choices are for you and how to make those in a sustainable way and how to apply them in the text of your environment and your business and your client group and how to kind of expand what your knowledge is, right?
So still very much checking that box of like making sure you know what you don't know yet, you know, like making sure you don't have any gaps in your knowledge, but also guiding you in a way that's not just like, okay, I read this thing online and I'm trying to apply it blindly to my business by myself, right?
Now, again, birth is possible without a doula, right? Your business is also possible without a coach, but it's not as good. Like it feels less supported, it feels less clear, it feels less calm. It's just not as good without some guidance, some strategy, some practical and logistical support and that is what I do for my doula business owners, and I love it.
It is the same kind of gratification that I get when I'm at a birth, right? And I'm like, I know I'm making this birth better for you. And it lights me up because I love that for you and your lived experience, right?
So as I help someone grow their doula business and clarify their doula business and make more money in their doula business, I'm like, yes. Look at you killing it in your business, right? And I know that I'm leaving you better than when you came to me and with a lot of guidance about how to move forward, right?
And that honestly is why I do this. I believe doulas are vital to keeping birth safer and not more dangerous, to undoing some of the racist medicalized systems that are in play in the midst of labor and delivery, right?
I believe that doulas are an essential part of that process. And therefore, doulas need support to stay sustained, right? You need support to grow your business and not burn out because we need you. Pregnant people need you, right?
People need you in their world to be able to continue to give birth and support people giving birth in a way that is aligned with them and is perpetuating justice and health and prosperity and not perpetuating harm, right?
And so me helping you do what you do better is helping the people in your world have better births. And I love that. Like, that is exactly. what I want to have more of in this world, right? So the reason I'm going on and on today about doula coaching is one, I think I'm just having a very passionate, like we all need support kind of day.
And then two, because I am opening up another 90 day mastermind. So my 90 day doula growth accelerator will open up a new cohort in September. So my current cohort is like about two thirds of the way through.
We're going to be wrapping up in the next month or so. And then in September, I'm starting up a new one. So if you already have been hanging around with me for a while, you know that I do a lot less work in July, so I can hang out with my kiddos a lot and have some rest.
And so that's true for my accelerator as well. And then I'm starting in September because that September, October, November, like really kind of gets us through the end of the year without overlapping with.
too many winter holidays and gets you like a really firm foundation for finishing the year strong and then getting amped up for January. So that September cohort is opening up. Right now for the next week, I have, so it ends the first week of June if you're listening to this in real time.
So it's next week. And then I have a special going that if you sign up for the September cohort now, you get a summertime one-hour call with me. That is an extra call. You don't normally get it when you sign up.
And so part of that is to help you kind of dig into what to do in the meantime. Like until we start in September, what do you start working on? What do you start kind of getting clear about? And how do you start moving yourself forward?
So that bonus call is about a $250 investment normally. And so you're getting $250 of free coaching essentially when you sign up now and save your spot for that September group. So all of that information is in the show notes.
If you're in my newsletter group, you are getting some emails about this as well. But I just want to make sure that you kind of have an understanding of why it's so important to have this kind of support in your business and why you should really consider being part of that September cohort.

Business doulaing is my second love! I love supporting families through birth and helping to welcome babies earthside. But I really really love doulaing doula business owners into their business glory! You are full of magic my friend, and you may just need someone to show you that.
Quote from the show:
“I know that I make running a business easier for doula client, for doula business owners. I make it more clear, less frantic, better supported, not doing any hip squeezes on any doulas, although I would do that if you were in person with me. But the emotional and practical support is huge. And I realized that doula business owners tend to be firmly in the group of businesses that are sort of like “I got this by myself” Right, and I know not everyone fits that box. So if you're like “Kaely, I don't think like that.” Okay, that's great I love that for you But a lot of people are like I can figure it out. I can do it. I can figure it out I can get it done and the reality is Birth can also be figured out right like your client could give birth without you I don't know about you, but I have a lot of clients who say to me I couldn't have done this without you and I'm like you could have but would it have been the same experience? ”
