Welcome to Dula Tips and Tits, the podcast where we cut through the noise and get real about what it takes to build a sustainable doula business. I'm Kaylee Harrod. I've been a doula informally for 14 years and full time for seven.

Around here, we don't sugarcoat stuff. We talk autonomy, owning your worth, creating a business that works for you. No fluff, no burnout, just the honest truth on how to be your own best boss. Let's get into today's episode.

    Unknown speaker 00:36

Hello and welcome back to Dula Tips and Tits. Today, we're talking about a chill, slow, lovely, swimming filled July of 2025. Like, fuck yeah, man. I love the summer. I love it. Like, I love swimming.

    Unknown speaker 00:58

I love sun dresses. I love flip flops, even though apparently it's not cool to have sandals with your toes out. I mean, I have teenagers, so they're always like, mommy, wear socks. I'm like, socks and sandals.

    Unknown speaker 01:09

No, thank you. I wear sandals so my toes can be out. Like, so my feet don't get hot, right? And I'm like living up the sandal life because last summer, I had a frickin' boot on for part of the summer.

    Unknown speaker 01:21

Like, no, no, no. I am living in these sandals. Barefoot, yes, please, right? Like, no, that's, you are not going to make me. I don't need to be cool anymore. Like, that's not my job right now. But the other thing that happens in July is that I have a lot of time to figure out what is not working the rest of the year, right?

    Unknown speaker 01:46

If you listened to my last episode, it was full of all sorts of half analogies. Like, the treadmill, and the epidural timing, and the hamster wheel, right? But I think the like... Like the idea there is that when you're on, I'm going to start it up again, I'm like, here we go.

    Unknown speaker 02:09

I got myself going. When you're on the too fast treadmill and you're like, why is this not working? You kind of need to get off of it to evaluate what's happening, right? Like you need to just like step off so that you don't hurt yourself and also so you can be like, okay, it needs to slow down or like the wheel is messed up or you know, like whatever it is, right?

    Unknown speaker 02:32

My analogies are not as good today, but the summertime for me is a time of spaciousness. My happiest summer day is like we are chilling, going swimming, coming home, eating food, watching movies, catching fireflies, like really just like the summer dream, right?

    Unknown speaker 02:57

I love summer so much. I also get really tired of it like I I for sure get like super hot and sweaty and sticky It's super humid in DC. So by the end of the summer, I'm just like give me sweaters and coffee You know like mugs and sweaters and jeans and boots.

    Unknown speaker 03:12

Yes, please. So maybe in some ways I'm just like your stereotypical white girl from the Midwest, you know, we have like all four seasons and I love them all but the summertime part of what it reminds me of is like Spontaneity right like just like who wants to go swimming Let's go swimming and I mean there's so much privilege here, right?

    Unknown speaker 03:34

Like I live in DC where we have literally dozens of free pools so the access to things like swimming things like picnics things like go down by the river like I mean we are Fortunate, right? We are so freaking privileged.

    Unknown speaker 03:50

We can hike for free within an hour. We can see a Waterfall for free within an hour. We can go like wade in the river Maybe not all the rivers around here should be waded in but we can do that, right?

    Unknown speaker 04:04

And we can also like go for a bike ride we can go to the pool Like we have so much access to just like awesome beautiful summertime along with like we live in a city So there's like ice cream food trucks, right?

    Unknown speaker 04:17

Like there's it's just We can also just like go down to the mall and see the monuments with all the tourists and eat Like awesome burgers and ice cream on the mall, you know So there's there's like I have the ability and the access to do that right and I do not take that for granted But I think the other thing is that I I mean, I can't tell you it's been like gosh.

    Unknown speaker 04:41

I think this is my fourth. This is my third summer Taking July off right and every year about halfway through July. I'm like, whoa, I feel rested I feel like rejuvenated and then I'm like, I have new ideas I have sparks for awesome stuff to do in the fall.

    Unknown speaker 05:05

I have this excitement back about marketing my business, about showing up for my clients. Every single year so far, it's only been three years, but still, all three years. By the time I get to the end of July, I'm like, I hope a baby comes soon.

    Unknown speaker 05:24

That is exactly why I take July. Because I want that. I want to get to the end and be like, yes, you're in labor because I miss it. And I'm like, oh, I love attending births. I really do love attending births.

    Unknown speaker 05:40

And also, it is really hard on my body. It is really hard on my family. And it still needs intentional rest. So for me, I think in some ways, it's the rest, just literally sleep. Right? but it's also the spaciousness of like, what could today hold, you know?

    Unknown speaker 06:01

Like, and I, I mean, obviously I still work, like there's still, I kind of try to space my days out. So I'm like, okay, Monday, Monday I'm off, Friday I'm off, but then like Tuesday, Wednesday I do some work and Thursday sometimes depending on the day, you know?

    Unknown speaker 06:14

So I try to like be clear about my boundaries so that I know I have days where I just have nothing. And then I can be like, okay, Monday, we can just do whatever we want. But even the days that I'm working, I'm not working like a full day, right?

    Unknown speaker 06:28

Like if I'm teaching in the evening, I'm not doing stuff in the morning, you know? So I'm still trying to have kind of like a lazy flow to the day. And my kids do like summer stuff, you know, summer programs and things.

    Unknown speaker 06:40

So it's not just like we're all home all day together. It used to be that, but it's not that now. But still there is just a different pace, right? Like there's a different spaciousness to it, but also really the rejuvenation that comes with that is huge.

    Unknown speaker 06:58

Like the ability to be like, okay, now that I rested, I have a better perspective on this. I have a more spacious understanding, right? There's just this space that's like, okay, since I'm here, the space is like, okay, since I'm here, I can actually be creative, right?

    Unknown speaker 07:23

I can like be innovative. I can show up with a different kind of excitement, you know? And honestly, I usually either like reschedule posts from the year for the podcast or I do like a bunch of guests or whatever.

    Unknown speaker 07:41

This year I'm actually just like recording them kind of batch recording, right? So this is recorded a few weeks before you're actually hearing it, you know, like that. That's why I'm doing that instead.

    Unknown speaker 07:53

And so there's like different versions of this in terms of sustainability. But the same, the same result is always there that's like, okay, because I've gotten to step back from this for a minute, I can show up with a vengeance, right?

    Unknown speaker 08:08

Like I can show up with like a vigor that I haven't had, because I just have mental and emotional and physical space that I haven't had, you know? And honestly, it's necessary. And I know like I firmly hold that this is a space that I can do now because of the money my business brings in, right?

    Unknown speaker 08:32

It is not something that's sustainable for everyone. I know that. However, I really want to reiterate this that like, if you're currently living kind of paycheck to paycheck as a doula, I want you to think about the strategy that makes it more sustainable because that is exactly the burnout road, right?

    Unknown speaker 08:51

Like that is the road that's like... shit, I have to let this person hire me because otherwise, I'm not going to have enough money. And like that road does not have a good ending. You know, like it just has a like bitter, tired, burnt out, not living life ending.

    Unknown speaker 09:11

And that is not what I want for you. Like we need you as a doula in this world. And I don't want you to be going down the road that crashes and burns like that, right? Like I want you to be on the road that still is like a little windy, right?

    Unknown speaker 09:24

Still is a little steep. Here we go with the analogies. Yes, they're back. But like is sustainable and is paced at a pace that you can do and builds in some intentional rest and systems that help your business run when you are resting, which we are going to talk about.

    Unknown speaker 09:45

So get excited for that because we're going to talk about what happens in the background when I am resting. So I will see you in the next episode next Wednesday. Thanks for joining us for this episode of the doula tips and tits podcast.

Rest sparks growth and creativity! Remember how our parents used to say you have to sleep so we can play tomorrow? Turns out they were/are right! Rest is the way our bodies and brains get new ideas and new fuel and new desire. So often our businesses get stuck because we don’t have the capacity to dream and change and grow and critically think about what we’re doing.
