Best Doula in DC - And How To Take A Compliment

  • Unknown speaker 00:04

Welcome to Dula Tips and Tits, the podcast where we cut through the noise and get real about what it takes to build a sustainable doula business. I'm Kaylee Harrod. I've been a doula informally for 14 years and full time for seven.

Around here, we don't sugarcoat stuff. We talk autonomy, owning your worth, creating a business that works for you. No fluff, no burnout, just the honest truth on how to be your own best boss. Let's get into today's episode.

Hello and welcome back to Dula Tips and Tits. I want to talk today about vulnerability when you receive praise and how you can use that to your advantage. I have a couple clients who have become very, very close friends.

One in particular, we live very close to each other, but also we just are very similar in personality and in beliefs about the world and whatnot. I've been her doula twice and am very much like part of her kiddo's life and very close with her.

We hang out and when I, at some point, I was venting to her about something and said, I think I am one of the better doulas in D.C., and she said, no, no. She was like, if you feel bad saying it, I'll say it.

You are the best doula in all of D.C. And I was like, I mean, she was like, no, no, definitively. And obviously, she's biased towards me. She adores me and also I was her doula twice. Right, but but I think the like, receiving of praise is necessary in this work as well because it is such heart-driven work that we need some affirmation in that as well as the like fuel not fuel I don't know as the a little bit of of like guidance on us not being off base in what we're doing right when we're doing work that is centering other people so much and is giving so much of ourselves there are times that we need to be reminded that it's worth it right that it is important work that it is making a difference and even when it's like totally disruptive to our life it's not because we're not good at it right and so when I think about that moment when she was like you know you're the best you're the best doula in all of DC I first was like really happy that she said that and then I was like oh don't say that to anyone else you know um like a little embarrassed that she said it and then I was like you know what this is not the first time I've received this feedback like I've worked with Obies and midwives who've said like you're the best doula I've ever worked with you know and I think I have to take that in and not think of it as like an insult to all the other doulas but take it in for what it is like in that moment I supported in the way I needed to I showed up in a way that was professional and also incredibly helpful and I did a kick-ass job of being a doula and that's exactly what I was trying to do like that was what my intention was right you Thanks for joining us for this episode of the doula tips and tips podcast.

Sometimes the hardest part of being a doula isn’t the long labors or tricky consultations—it’s learning how to take a compliment. In this episode, I share the story of being called the “best doula in DC” by clients and what it stirred up for me as both a birth professional and business coach. We’ll talk about imposter syndrome, celebrating wins, and why learning to receive positive feedback is essential for growing a sustainable doula business. If you’ve ever struggled to believe what your clients already know about you, this episode is for you.

Quote from the show:

“I think I have to take that in and not think of it as like an insult to all the other doulas but take it in for what it is like in that moment I supported in the way I needed to I showed up in a way that was professional and also incredibly helpful and I did a kick-ass job of being a doula and that's exactly what I was trying to do like that was what my intention was right.”
